Junkets, Jollies or Jaunts. Whatever you call them there are three main reasons why you should be going on them

1) To learn – Whatever field you work in it is vital to keep up with the latest developments. Whether that be skills or knowledge taking the time to go on a trip will pay back on your CV in the long term

2) To make contacts – Success breeds success and the contacts and impressions you can make by junketing with colleagues and vendors can be invaluable. The more you do it, the more you’ll be asked to do it as you identified as an expert in the field.

3) To have fun – By far the most important reason can be to get away from the corporate atmosphere and relax. Remember a change is as good as a rest, so a change and a rest must be twice as good. Truly great junkets involve beaches, someone elses corporate credit card, as little actual work as possible and ideally some real holiday makers to interact with.

Remember that vendors will be trying to make you aware of their product and so are the most easily exploited group. They want you to be entertained and will certainly be making no reports back to the boss.

Depending what you want from this site you can look at it in two ways. If you really do want to learn then consider whether the event is the best match to your ambitions. If you just want a free holiday then do consider how much work you’ll have to do. It’s no good going to Monaco during the Grand Prix if you spend 14 hours a day in the office.
